Art Deco Fireplaces
On a cold winter’s day, there is nothing better than to sit by a cozy and warm fireplace, ablaze with a crackling fire. Historically, fireplaces were the sole source of heating a home, and there would be a fireplace in each bedroom and sitting room of a typical house. Also, wood stoves were both practical and functional by being both a heating and cooking source. As the years progressed into the early 1900's, people wanted not only function, but beauty in their homes as well. Art Deco fireplaces and stoves exemplified this desire and had now become the focus of a room.
Antique fireplaces in the Art Deco style often had a surround made of cast iron with moulded flowers or leaves. The iron was then polished to a shine. Sometimes tiles or enamel would be used to give the fireplace colour. The lines of the stove or fireplace were curved, with a modernist feel, or very angular, even through the mantle and chimney.
In a typical Art Deco styled home, the point was one of simplicity and minimalism, and the sitting room was no exception. Even the mantel of the fireplace was left uncluttered. Often a mere clock would sit on top of the mantel (hence the advent of the Art Deco mantel clock), or perhaps a beautiful piece of glass by someone such as Rene Lalique or a beautiful vase by William Moorcroft. Art Deco mirrors were also popular above the fireplace.
Today, people want the ease of a gas fire with a typically modern style, so they can turn it on and off with the flip of a switch. But they also want the style of a bygone era, particularly if they live in a period property. It is easy to have both. Gas fires are often fitted into Art Deco fireplaces, which add style and sophistication to any room together with the practical functionality of a modern heating system.
